The tonka bean is native to the Venezuelan Orinoco area. These beans are grown in Brazil though. They are dipped in rum and then dried. Thus, they develop their incomparable flavor. The taste of the sweet tonka beans is reminiscent of vanilla. Ideal for desserts like cookies and cakes. Processing at home is best done with a nutmeg grater.
